Threshold

Ø A threshold exists in the in-between spaces. They are spatial conditions that are not only physical openings, but have perceptual meanings that are associated with rituals, symbols, and behaviour. Thresholds can link spaces, objects, and even ideas together. The concept of a threshold as a transition can change movement and interaction, thus becoming a connector.

Boundary

Ø A boundary can be defined physically or psychologically. A junction, doorway, or  gate.  Spatial perception is deeply linked to boundaries, as they are spatial conditions that distinguish activities. Materials can define physical boundaries which divide spaces, but also activate confrontation and exchange. When materiality is used to shift the idea of a boundary, it allows greater connection to our surroundings which start to affect human activity.

Affordance

Ø Affordance = perception. This perception of space or objects drive action, which allows choice from a variety of possibilities that depend on users stimulus response. Affordances provide strong visual clues that make it easier for the user to understand how to use or interact with an object.

Affect

Ø An emotional reaction that influences behaviour.

Comfort

Ø The feeling of being at ease, secure, and safe.

Third Space

Ø A third space can be defined as a home away from home, an in-between, hybrid space that facilities and fosters community life, while allowing increased interaction.
